Family enjoying spring green forest during their portrait session in Northern Michigan.

Northern Michigan is finally waking up from the long nap of winter, and the evidence is all around us. The snow is melting, the days are stretching longer, and the brown of winter is fading as the first spring green shoots push through the forest floor. Spring here is simply delightful—soft golden light warming the beginnings of the wildflowers on the trails, temperatures that no longer hurt, and a fresh sense that the year is officially underway. These things combined make spring one of the best seasons for family portraits!

Regardless of the size and needs for your memories and milestones, spring truly offers the perfect backdrop. The light is still rather gentle, so you can avoid the harsh summer glare, while the crowds are still minimal, which helps to keep the kids on track for the photos. Also, the cooler temperatures, compared to summer, allow everyone in the family to maximize their energy for the photos, without the threat of overheating. As Northern Michigan photographers who specializes in authentic, adventure-style family sessions, we’ve seen spring turn ordinary family outings into cherished love stories.

In this guide, we’ll share our favorite spring family portrait ideas, some of the top locations to consider, a few practical tips, and of course, some inspiration pulled straight from real sessions we’ve had in the past! We hope you are able to use this to plan a session that truly feels joyful and effortless for you and your family.

Why Northern Michigan Spring Family Portraits Feel the Best

There are several reasons why summer and fall cannot compare to spring:

  • Beautiful, diffused light – It’s easy to look radiant with soft, flattering light of longer golden-hour windows in the early mornings and late afternoons of spring.
  • Comfortable weather – Because of layering for the 40s – 60s temperatures you’ll encounter, everyone can easily stay comfortable, without sweating or freezing.
  • Spring colors & textures – Browns suddenly renew into spring greens and thawing ponds and lakes create natural frames of interesting color and radiance.
  • Fewer people – The privacy you need for candid moments can happen more abundantly in spring, as popular spots like beaches and trails are quiet compared to peak summer visits.
  • Renewed freshness – Spring is naturally both renewing and refreshing—perfect for families celebrating new additions, milestones, or simply wanting updated portraits!

These elements combine to create exactly what we aim to capture for every family—a portrait session that is comfortable, colorful, and completely stress-free.

Top Spring Family Portrait Ideas & Locations

Here are three of our favorite concepts for spring sessions, each paired with a Northern Michigan location that shines during this time of the year.

1. Forest Family Moments on Blooming Trails

Subtle colors bring forests alive in springtime with their bright greens, tiny wildflowers, and springy moss. Truly these stunning runways for spring adventures make the forest trails shine!

• Best locations:

• Ideas to try:

  • Allow kids to lead the way on the short hike, while allowing us to capture their natural smiles and sibling banter.
  • Keep an eye out for spots you’d like to have in your background, like tree trunks and low branches for the perfect Framed by Nature photo for your big family hug.
  • If the ground is dry, sit among the fresh wildflowers dotting the trail or field, to truly breathe in the spring atmosphere.

2. Shoreline Play on a Lake Huron Beach

Going to the beach in spring isn’t unusual, it’s simply different. The waves are still chilly, but the sand is soft, and the light reflects beautifully off the water. If you love the lake life, you should consider a spring visit!

• Best locations:

• Ideas to try:

  • Slip your flip-flops off for some barefoot beach walking while your kids splash their feet in the cool and shallow water (bring towels for quick dry-off).
  • Build sandcastles or attempt to find Michigan’s coveted Petoskey Stone along the shoreline! These turn play and scavenger hunts into posed-but-natural moments.
  • If you’re truly adventurous and an early bird, aim for a sunrise session. You’ll be on the sunrise side of the state of Michigan after all.

3. Open Fields & Meadows at Golden-Hour Sessions

Sometimes to tap into the spring mindset, you need to find expansive and open spaces to truly allow your family to move around and let out that pent up, joyful energy.

• Best locations:

• Ideas to try:

  • Gently toss your kids in the air to truly showcase the big skies that can only be enjoyed in these vast open areas.
  • Walk through some of these meadows and open fields, holding hands and skipping through the flowers. It may sound cliché, but it’s a lot of fun and the photos are always gorgeous.
  • End the day with a big group pile-up in the grass, looking at the camera, and one from above, while you and your family look at the vast sky above you.

Extra Tips for a Stress-Free Spring Family Session

Timing is everything – You’ll want to book either an early morning or late afternoon session for the softest light available. Avoid midday if possible, but if necessary, choose a location that offers plenty of shade to help your photos not be too bright.

What to wear – Spring sessions call to soft pastels, earthy tones, and light layers to set the tone for your photos. Avoid bright white, which will wash out in bright sunlight. Coordinate your colors but don’t match exactly with each other, in order to keep everyone looking natural and comfortable.

Bring the fun – Definitely bring some snacks, bubbles, favorite toys, or even a small picnic basket for an afternoon lunch to the session to maximize the authenticity of your photos.

Keep it short & sweet – Don’t expect your session to last much longer than 90 minutes, or less than 45 minutes. The sweet spot for adults and children alike are 60 minute sessions to keep everyone joyful, and to ensure the maximum number of portraits for your needs.

Weather flexibility – Living in Michigan, you learn that the weather is always quick to change it’s mind. After all, we have the saying, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.” Ensuring that you’re not disappointed with your session date and risking rescheduling, it helps to be flexible for any non-severe weather that may arise. Brave adventurers who bring umbrellas to their sessions and dance in the rain have more fun and beautiful photos than those not willing to risk the quick changes in the weather.
